The UM Gators
are very excited
about adding
Track and Field
into our athletic
program. According
to information
we researched,
Track and Field,
along with road
running, cross-country
running and
race walking,
make up the
umbrella sport
of all athletics.
We are members
of and will
participate
with the Amateur
Athletic Union
(AAU) and the
USA Track &
Field (USATF)
events.
Track and field
is a sport comprising
of various competitive
athletic contests
based around
the activities
of running,
jumping and
throwing. The
sport of track
and field style
events has its
roots in human
prehistory and
is among the
oldest of all
sporting competitions.
It is comprised
of running,
jumping and
throwing, which
are all natural
and universal
forms of human
physical expression.
Track and field
events are generally
individual sports
with athletes
challenging
each other to
decide a single
victor. The
racing events
are won by the
athlete with
the fastest
time, while
the jumping
and throwing
events are won
by the athlete
who has achieved
the greatest
distance or
height in the
contest. The
running events
are categorized
as sprints,
middle and long-distance
events, relays,
and hurdling.
Regular jumping
events include
long jump, triple
jump, high jump
and pole vault,
while the most
common throwing
events are shot
put, javelin,
discus and hammer.
There are also
"combined events",
such as heptathlon
and decathlon,
in which athletes
compete in a
number of the
above events.
Our organization
will maintain
records of our
youth best performances
in specific
events in order
to; first and
most importantly,
assist them
with becoming
the best all
around athlete
that they can
be; and second,
the information
will be used
to determine
the youth with
the fastest
times, in order
to determine
who will make
up our relay
team.
As you may know,
a relay is based
on the speed
of the runners,
the generally
accepted strategy
used in setting
up a 4 person
relay team is:
second fastest,
third fastest,
fourth fastest, then
fastest (anchor).
Each segment
of the relay
(the distance
run by one person)
is referred
to as a leg.
Although track
and field is
considered an
individualized
sport, the relay
is the one event
where our youth
will come together
and form a team.
We highly encourage
our youth that
play football,
basketball,
and/or cheerleading
to also participate
in our Track
and Field Program.
As a track and
field competitor,
your strength,
speed, conditioning
and technique
are critical
to your ultimate
success. Once
each youth has
obtained their
success individually,
they will also
be successful
as a team player.
